A breakdown
Addiction & Substance Use
Alcohol, drugs, gambling, porn โ when use stops being a choice.
Overview
Addiction is a chronic, treatable condition where the brain's reward circuitry has been conditioned to compulsively seek a substance or behaviour despite real harm. Recovery is rarely linear โ relapse is part of many people's stories, not the end of them.
Common signs
- Using more or longer than intended
- Strong cravings or urges
- Tolerance โ needing more for the same effect
- Withdrawal symptoms when cutting back
- Continued use despite problems with relationships, work or health
- Failed attempts to cut down
- Increasing time spent obtaining, using or recovering
What helps
In the UK, Turning Point, Change Grow Live and We Are With You offer free, confidential treatment.
Naltrexone, acamprosate, methadone and buprenorphine reduce cravings and withdrawal under medical supervision.
AA, NA, GA โ community-based fellowships. SMART Recovery is a secular cognitive-behavioural alternative.
Most addictions sit on top of unprocessed trauma โ addressing both is more effective than addressing use alone.
Daily practices
Small, repeatable habits โ not a checklist to fail at.
- 01HALT check: Am I Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired? Address the underlying signal
- 02Identify your top 3 triggers and pre-plan a response for each
- 03Replace the ritual, not just the substance (the moment between work and home matters)
- 04Connection beats willpower โ one human contact every day
When to reach out today
